Laton Spurgeon, a 25-year-old resident of Queens, NY, was tragically killed on December 19, 2006. Spurgeon was shot and then struck by a car as he was leaving his brother's home in Far Rockaway. The incident occurred amidst a violent feud between members of the Spurgeon family and the gang GIB (Get It in Bricks), an offshoot of the Bloods. This feud had been escalating in the Hammel Houses in Rockaway Beach, leading to numerous shootings and violent confrontations.
