Akeal Christopher, a 14-year-old Black male, was enjoying a summer evening with friends after leaving a graduation party in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn on June 27, 2012. As the group of friends walked near the intersection of Cornelia Street and Evergreen Avenue, they were tragically met with gunfire. In the midst of the chaos, a single bullet struck Akeal in the head. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he fought for his life for nearly two weeks.
On July 10, 2012, his 15th birthday, Akeal Christopher succumbed to his injuries and was taken off life support.
The investigation into Akeal's death was immediately hampered by a significant challenge: a lack of cooperation from witnesses. Despite several of Akeal's friends being present during the shooting, fear and a street culture of not 'snitching' created a wall of silence that detectives struggled to penetrate. Akeal's mother, Natasha Christopher, has spoken publicly about her belief that those who were with her son know the identity of the shooter but have been unwilling to come forward with information. One reported detail from the night of the shooting suggests that before the shots were fired, Akeal and his friends were confronted and asked if they were members of a group known as the 'Loot Crew.'
To this day, the murder of Akeal Christopher remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with his death. The New York City Police Department has stated that the case is still open and active, but without new information or witnesses willing to break their silence, justice for the teenager has remained elusive. His family continues to mourn his loss and advocate for an end to gun violence, holding onto the hope that one day the person or persons responsible for his death will be brought to justice.
