On a summer afternoon in Brooklyn, New York, on August 10, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Shaheim Rogers was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident unfolded at approximately 5:28 p.m. outside an apartment building located at 1566 Sterling Place in the Crown Heights neighborhood. Rogers was struck in the chest and was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.
Another man, who was 29 years old, was also shot during the same incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg but ultimately surviving.
The shooting is believed to be the result of a violent and ongoing feud between two rival street gangs, the Stain Gang and the Albany Gang. Investigators have alleged that Shaheim Rogers was a member of the Stain Gang. On the day of the fatal shooting, members of the Albany Gang allegedly drove into what is considered Stain Gang territory with the intent to commit violence. This act was part of a series of retaliatory shootings and acts of violence between the two groups, often fueled by taunts on social media.
A long-term investigation into the gang-related violence in the area, conducted by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau and the NYPD's Brooklyn North Violent Crime Squad, led to significant legal action. As a result of this investigation, indictments were brought against 11 alleged members of both the Stain Gang and the Albany Gang. The charges included second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and other related offenses.
Among those charged is Ibrahima Barry, an alleged member of the Albany Gang, who is specifically accused of orchestrating and carrying out the attack that resulted in the death of Shaheim Rogers. The indictment alleges that Barry stole an SUV, picked up fellow gang members, and then drove to Sterling Place where they opened fire. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police had taken several suspects into custody, but the formal charges and indictments came after the extended investigation into the rival gangs' activities.
