Twenty-three-year-old Terrance Beatty was shot and killed at a party on Lois Street. The sudden violence shattered the festive atmosphere, leaving friends and family to grapple with the senseless loss of a life cut short.
Another man, Brandon Pearce, who was 27 at the time, was also shot in the foot during the incident but survived his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led police to a suspect, Anthony Scott Ortiz, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident. According to authorities, an altercation involving a friend of Ortiz escalated, leading to the gunfire. Ortiz was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the shootings. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man known to some as 'WIKKED!!!', who was described as a rapper.
In March 2015, a Monroe County jury found Anthony Scott Ortiz, by then 19 years old, guilty of Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the death of Terrance Beatty and the assault on Brandon Pearce. Ortiz faced a maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison for his actions at the New Year's Eve party that ended in tragedy.
