In the early hours of March 16, 2014, a tragic event unfolded at the Mint Restaurant & Lounge in Garden City, New York, abruptly ending the life of 21-year-old Emmanuel Barnett. A college student with a promising future, Barnett was studying electrical engineering at Queensborough Community College. That night, what began as a social gathering descended into chaos when a large fight broke out inside the nightclub.
Following the altercation, several patrons, including Tyshaun Phillips,
then 23, were ejected from the establishment. In a senseless act of violence, Phillips returned to the vestibule of the club armed with a. 40 caliber handgun and fired multiple shots into the crowded area. The indiscriminate gunfire struck two people. Emmanuel Barnett suffered a catastrophic gunshot wound to the head, while a second individual, a 23-year-old man, was shot in the leg but survived.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Barnett was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital. He remained on life support for five days before succumbing to his injuries on March 21, 2014. The senselessness of the act was compounded by the fact that Barnett and Phillips did not appear to know each other.
The investigation into the shooting led Nassau County Police homicide detectives to Tyshaun Phillips of the Bronx. At the time of the incident, Phillips was on parole for a prior felony drug conviction from 2011. He was arrested on March 26, 2014, at a parole office. Initially, Phillips was charged with second-degree murder, to which he pleaded not guilty. However, as the case against him solidified, with witnesses identifying him as the shooter, the legal proceedings moved forward.
Just before his murder trial was set to begin, Phillips accepted a plea deal. On June 6, 2016, he pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault. Subsequently, on September 30, 2016, a judge sentenced Tyshaun Phillips to 23 years in prison for his role in the death of Emmanuel Barnett and the injury of another. During the sentencing, the victim's family expressed their profound and enduring grief, highlighting the promising life that was cut short.
