On a tragic Tuesday afternoon in Buffalo, New York, the life of 14-year-old Raymond Floyd Patterson III was cut short by gun violence. The young male was on a footbridge over the Kensington Expressway near the Kenfield-Langfield housing development on August 12, 2014, when chaos erupted. A fight that had broken out between two teenage girls escalated dramatically when a man opened fire into the crowd that had gathered to watch.
Raymond, an innocent bystander, was struck in the back, arm, and leg as he tried to flee the scene. He died on the footbridge. Three other teenagers were also wounded in the shooting but survived their injuries. At the time of the incident, police reported they were searching for a male suspect in his 20s.
The senseless act of violence prompted a strong community response, with many people coming forward to provide information to the police. This cooperation led to the swift arrest of 28-year-old Joseph Gant. He was taken into custody just two days after the shooting and was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and three counts of first-degree assault. At his arraignment, Gant pleaded not guilty and was held without bail.
