On a sidewalk in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, a dispute escalated with deadly consequences, claiming the life of a beloved father of four. Dennis Sanchez, a 39-year-old male, was fatally shot in the face on the evening of May 18, 2015. The incident occurred in front of 32 Park Street, near Beaver Street, where Sanchez was standing with a friend.
According to police, the shooting stemmed from an argument between several individuals regarding 'several baby mommas,' a dispute in
which Sanchez was not directly involved. As the argument intensified, one of the individuals involved shot Sanchez at point-blank range. A friend who was with Sanchez at the time recounted that the assailant fired, he ducked, and then another shot was fired. Sanchez was struck in the eye and was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Friends and family remembered him as a generous man who was a father figure to the neighborhood, often organizing barbecues and feeding the homeless. He is survived by three daughters and a son.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department expressed confidence that an arrest was imminent. The investigation was bolstered by video footage of the incident and a potential link to a fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man in Williamsburg the following day. It was believed that an individual present at the stabbing may have also been at the scene of Sanchez's murder. Police confirmed that while the shooter remained at large, another person who was present at the scene of the shooting was taken into custody. Despite these early developments and the expressed optimism from law enforcement, there have been no subsequent public reports detailing any arrests, the identification of a suspect, or any convictions in the killing of Dennis Sanchez.
