On a Tuesday evening in May, the life of 27-year-old Raphael Kurton was tragically cut short. It was shortly before 9:30 p.m. on May 26, 2015, outside a corner bodega on Newkirk Avenue in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. An argument broke out between Kurton and another man, a dispute that would have fatal consequences. The other man, identified as Patrick Zephir, suddenly pulled out a firearm. He fired six shots, striking Kurton in the torso and thigh.
