The peace of that Tuesday morning was shattered when Kyle Johnson, who lived less than half a mile from Ball, entered his neighbor's home through an unlocked back door. In a senseless act of violence, Johnson shot Ball in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun as he slept in his own bed. The motive for this brutal act was preceded by an altercation between the two men earlier that same morning.
Following the shooting, Johnson returned to his own residence and set it on fire. As firefighters arrived at the scene to battle the blaze, Johnson fired shots at them, creating a chaotic and dangerous situation for the first responders.
