A quiet street in West Babylon became the scene of a deadly shooting on the night of May 30, 2021. Daniel Smith, a 32-year-old male from Roosevelt, was sitting in the driver's seat of his parked car on Schenectady Avenue when he was ambushed. Shortly after 11:00 PM, an unknown assailant fired multiple gunshots into the vehicle, striking Smith.
The shooter fled the scene before police arrived, leaving behind a neighborhood shaken by the sudden violence.
First responders found Smith in his car, having sustained fatal injuries from the gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
In the immediate aftermath, Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives launched an investigation into the shooting. They appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the person or persons responsible for Daniel Smith's death. Authorities urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Homicide Squad or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers. As of now, there have been no announced arrests in the case, and the shooter remains at large. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by investigators.
