On March 14, 2016, the life of 23-year-old A’mani Hugh Anthony Miller was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence that remains unsolved. The young man from Brooklyn, New York, was found deceased in the fifth-floor stairwell of the Bay View Houses in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn. Miller, who worked as an apprentice at a construction company, had been delivering equipment on the day of his death.
His family believes he was lured to the public housing complex, a place he had been specifically warned to avoid.
The attack on Miller was described as particularly savage, suggesting a personal motive. He had been repeatedly stabbed and shot, and his body showed signs of torture before being thrown down a flight of stairs. His wallet was also missing. The sheer brutality of the murder was such that his family nearly had to have a closed-casket funeral. The last conversation he had with his mother, Allison Shinn, was a brief one while he was driving, where they exchanged 'I love yous.'
In the years following the murder, no arrests have been made, and the case officially remains an active investigation by the New York City Police Department. Police did release surveillance footage of a black car seen leaving the scene, hoping it would lead to a break in the case. Despite the passage of time, Miller's mother, Allison Shinn, continued to fight for justice for her son, even taking to the streets with a bullhorn to search for clues and witnesses. Tragically, she was later diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, a condition her husband believes was brought on by the stress and grief of her son's unsolved murder. Before her passing, her dying wish was to see her son's killer brought to justice. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information that could lead to the resolution of the case. Although police sources have indicated they have a suspect, they are still working to establish probable cause for an arrest.
