In the early morning hours of July 25, 2016, a tragic event unfolded in the Bronx that claimed the life of 33-year-old Beramy Garcia. The male victim was with a female acquaintance, 37-year-old Yajahira Duverge, near East 175th Street and Weeks Avenue when gunfire erupted at approximately 5:14 a.m. Garcia was struck multiple times, with gunshot wounds to his head, back, and wrist, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Duverge was transported to a local hospital where she also succumbed to her injuries.
The shooting occurred in the hours following the Dominican Day Parade, and while the two victims knew each other, they were reportedly not in a romantic relationship. Garcia, a father of two boys from the Morris Heights neighborhood, was remembered by his father as a hardworking man dedicated to his sons. The incident left both families and the local community in mourning.
An investigation into the double homicide led police to identify a suspect. In late October 2016, authorities arrested 37-year-old Luis Chacon of Mount Hope. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of both Beramy Garcia and Yajahira Duverge.
