In the quiet, early morning hours of September 12, 2020, in the small village of Venedocia, a single gunshot shattered the peace and ended the life of 19-year-old George McLaurine of Lima, Ohio. Just before 1 a.m., the Van Wert County Sheriff's Office received a distressing 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a grim tableau: McLaurine, a male, lay unconscious and not breathing in the yard, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.
Bystanders were already performing CPR when law enforcement took over life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. The young man was rushed to Mercy Health-St. Rita's Medical Center in nearby Lima, but his injury was too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and senseless loss. The investigation into the fatal shooting began immediately, with deputies working to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
It did not take long for investigators to identify a suspect. Almost immediately after the shooting, they arrested 23-year-old Trey M. Jones of Spencerville. Jones was initially charged with a single count of reckless homicide, a third-degree felony, and was booked into the Van Wert County Correctional Facility to await his day in court. As the legal process unfolded, a grand jury indicted Jones on more serious charges, including reckless homicide with a firearm specification, using a weapon while intoxicated, and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.
In court, Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. His bond was set at a substantial $500,000. Ultimately, in May of 2021, the case reached its conclusion. Trey Jones was sentenced in Van Wert Common Pleas Court to 18 months in prison for his role in the death of George McLaurine. The final charges were for improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and attempted reckless homicide, bringing a close to a case that had tragically cut a young life short.
