On a Thursday evening in Indianapolis, what began as a night like any other tragically became the final moments for Jose Eduardo Hernandez. The 26-year-old man was near the Garfield Park neighborhood on October 10, 2024, when he was shot. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of Park Haven Way around 11 p.m. and found Hernandez with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators began to piece together the events of that night, believing that Hernandez was the victim of a robbery that turned deadly. Their investigation led them to identify two individuals as suspects in the case. The first, 33-year-old Brittany Norton, was arrested in early January of the following year. She faced serious charges, including murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and prostitution, painting a grim picture of the circumstances that may have led to Hernandez's death.
The second suspect, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, remained at large for several months. His apprehension came unexpectedly during a routine traffic stop in the early morning hours of September 14, 2025. An IMPD officer pulled over a vehicle for a couple of traffic infractions, and a background check on the passengers revealed an active arrest warrant for the now 18-year-old male in connection with Hernandez's murder. He was taken into custody without incident, while the other occupants of the car were released. Both he and Norton are now awaiting trial for their alleged roles in the death of Jose Eduardo Hernandez.
