In the summer of 2016, a dispute in a Brooklyn parking lot turned fatal for 28-year-old Zavon Gordon. On the evening of August 4th, Gordon, a father to a young child, found himself in an argument with another man outside of an AutoZone on Flatbush Avenue. The verbal altercation escalated tragically when the other man produced a firearm and shot Gordon in the chest.
Despite the severe injury, a determined Gordon managed to get into his vehicle and drive himself approximately half a mile
to the 63rd Precinct stationhouse in a desperate bid for help. Police officers at the precinct called for medical assistance, and he was quickly transported to Kings County Hospital. Tragically, his efforts to survive were not enough, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Before he succumbed to his injuries, however, Gordon was able to provide crucial information to the authorities, reportedly identifying the man who shot him from a photo array.
The investigation into the shooting continued for several weeks. Then, on September 22, 2016, the New York Police Department announced the arrest of 26-year-old Winfred Chrispen in connection with Zavon Gordon's death. Chrispen was subsequently charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities indicated that the charges were not immediately elevated to murder as it was believed Chrispen had been slashed during the confrontation, raising the possibility of self-defense. The investigation was said to be ongoing following the arrest.
