In the spring of 2017, a grim discovery was made in Rochester, New York, unsettling the community. The body of 34-year-old David Jones Jr., a male resident of the city, was found on a pedestrian bridge in Genesee Valley Park. The circumstances of his death were particularly brutal; he had been shot, and his body was subsequently set on fire.
The investigation into this violent act led authorities to two suspects: 28-year-old Imani Williams and 32-year-old Syjesman Brown Jr.
At the time of his arrest, Brown was on parole. In November 2017, both individuals were charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of David Jones Jr. The case presented a complex web of events, as Williams and Brown were also implicated in other violent crimes in the area around the same period. This included the murder of another man, Alexander Powell, and a non-fatal shooting and robbery attempt.
The legal proceedings that followed were unusual. Williams and Brown were tried together in a single trial, but their cases were decided by two separate juries. This arrangement was made to handle evidence that was specific to only one of the defendants. The trial, which commenced in April 2019, brought forth the details of a violent crime spree. Prosecutors alleged that on the night of his death, David Jones Jr. was at a strip club where he met Imani Williams. It was claimed that they left together for the park, with Syjesman Brown Jr. following in a separate vehicle.
In May 2019, the juries delivered their verdicts. Syjesman Brown Jr. was found guilty of the second-degree murder of David Jones Jr. He was also convicted for the murder of Alexander Powell and for the attempted murder and robbery of the third victim. For his role in these crimes, Brown received a sentence of 75 years to life in prison, ensuring he would likely spend the remainder of his life incarcerated. Imani Williams, however, was acquitted of the murder of David Jones Jr. While cleared of the most serious charge in connection with his death, she was convicted of attempted second-degree robbery and attempted fourth-degree grand larceny related to the other incident. For these convictions, she was sentenced to a term of seven years in prison.
