In the late summer of 2020, the life of 19-year-old Darius Dillard was tragically cut short on a street in Rochester, New York. On September 6th, the young man was fatally wounded by gunfire, a victim of an act of violence that would later be detailed in a courtroom. His death led to an investigation by the Rochester Police Department, which would soon focus on a single suspect.
The investigation into Dillard's death pointed towards another young man, Markevion Bells.
Just days after the shooting, on September 11, 2020, authorities arrested Bells, who was 20 years old at the time, and charged him with the second-degree murder of Darius Dillard. Further charges against Bells included two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors would later argue that the motive behind the fatal shooting stemmed from a previous altercation between Bells and Dillard.
Markevion Bells' case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial that brought the details of that fateful September day to light. After hearing the evidence and testimony presented by both the prosecution and the defense, a jury delivered its verdict. Bells was found guilty of the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. In addition to this, he was convicted on both counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Following his conviction, Markevion Bells was sentenced for his role in the death of Darius Dillard. In April 2022, a judge sentenced him to 25 years in prison for the manslaughter charge. He also received a concurrent sentence of 15 years for each of the weapon possession charges. This sentence brought a legal conclusion to a case that began with a senseless act of violence and ended with a long-term prison sentence for the man found responsible for Dillard's death.
