In the early morning hours of May 31, 2017, a life was tragically cut short in the Bronx. Rameez Maragh, a 28-year-old man, was leaving the Truth Bar, a nightclub on Bronxwood Avenue near East 221st Street in the Williamsbridge neighborhood, when an argument escalated into fatal violence. At approximately 4 a.m., Maragh was shot multiple times in his chest, left arm, and right thigh.
His friends rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The events that led to Maragh's death began with a dispute involving two other men, later identified as Abdiel Martinez-Linares and Dashawn Palmer. During the confrontation, Martinez-Linares produced a. 380-caliber pistol and opened fire on Maragh. The investigation that followed moved swiftly. Dashawn Palmer, who had a previous robbery conviction from 2013, was taken into custody at the scene. He was subsequently charged with murder for his role in the incident.
The following day, authorities apprehended the man identified as the primary shooter, Abdiel Martinez-Linares, at his apartment in the Parkside Houses in Allerton. Both he and Palmer faced serious charges in connection with the murder of Rameez Maragh. The nightclub where the shooting took place, formerly known as Club Mystique, had a troubled history, including a prior shooting and a police raid, which brought scrutiny upon the establishment in the wake of the killing. The arrests of the two suspects brought a measure of progress for a community grappling with the senseless loss of a young life.
