In the Bronx, a grim discovery was made on the night of May 31, 2017, that brought a violent end to the life of 45-year-old Noel Farrow. Firefighters, responding to a blaze in a third-floor apartment on Gleason Avenue, found Farrow's body in the kitchen. It was quickly determined that the fire was not the cause of his death; rather, he had been fatally shot in the head.
The fire, which was deemed incendiary, was believed to have been set to conceal the murder.
Noel Farrow, a man with a known criminal history, including a conviction for involvement in a cocaine distribution ring, had only been living in the apartment for a couple of months. In the immediate aftermath of the discovery of his body, the New York Police Department began a homicide investigation. Their initial focus was a man captured on surveillance video leaving the building around the time of the incident. This individual was described as a Black man with a beard, wearing a baseball cap, a waist-length jacket, and blue jeans. For years, the case remained without a public resolution.
The investigation eventually led to a significant breakthrough with the arrest of a suspect, Rodney Spratley, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in August 2023. Spratley was extradited to the Bronx and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Farrow's death. The motive for the killing was alleged to be a robbery for drugs and money.
Following his arrest, Rodney Spratley's case proceeded to the federal court system in the Southern District of New York. The charges were serious enough that the U.S. Attorney's Office conducted a capital case review to determine if they would seek the death penalty. However, in October 2023, prosecutors filed a letter with the court stating their decision not to pursue capital punishment against Spratley. Court proceedings were scheduled to continue in late 2023, marking the next chapter in the long road to justice for the violent death of Noel Farrow.
