In the late summer of 2017, a dispute on the streets of Brooklyn escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of 28-year-old Tayron Gittens. The incident unfolded around 1 a.m. on August 27th in the East Flatbush neighborhood, stemming from what authorities have described as a road rage altercation on Ralph Avenue. During the confrontation, Gittens was shot in the head.
Emergency services rushed Gittens to Brookdale Hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, August 31, 2017. His death prompted a swift investigation by the New York City Police Department.
On the same day that Gittens passed away, police arrested 39-year-old Troy Williams in connection with the shooting. Williams was subsequently charged with murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities believe the tragic event began as a dispute on the road that tragically escalated to gunfire.
An account of the incident suggests that Gittens was driving near the intersection of Tilden and Ralph avenues when he nearly struck two women crossing the street. An argument reportedly ensued between Gittens and the pedestrians. It was at this point that Williams is alleged to have approached and shot Gittens in the head. Williams later pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
