In the quiet darkness of a Brooklyn street, the life of Robert Caldwell, a 48-year-old Black man, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On January 31, 2021, in the Canarsie neighborhood, Caldwell was struck by multiple bullets, suffering wounds to his torso and leg. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The attack did not appear to be a robbery, as his personal belongings, including his phone, money, and jewelry, were all left untouched at the scene.
Caldwell's past was a complicated one, marked by encounters with the law. He had previously been arrested on a murder charge in connection with a shooting in 1990, although he was never convicted of that crime. He did, however, serve a decade in prison for attempted robbery and bail jumping, securing his release in 2018. In the years that followed, Caldwell had made significant efforts to rebuild his life. While incarcerated, he earned his GED and obtained certifications for maintenance work.
Upon his return to society, Caldwell found employment with a nonprofit organization that provided social services to homeless children. His family described him as a model parolee who was deeply committed to caring for his four children and two granddaughters. They were at a loss to explain why he would be targeted, stating that he had no known conflicts with anyone in the neighborhood. Investigators have considered the possibility that his criminal history may have played a role in his death, but the case remains under investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified, leaving a grieving family with unanswered questions.
