On a cold January afternoon in 2018, a burst of violence shattered the mid-day calm on a street corner in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Earnest Brownlee, a 55-year-old man, had just stepped out of the B&G Deli and Food Corp. on Throop Avenue after ordering his lunch.
