On a fall evening in the Bronx, the life of 41-year-old Gregory Washington was tragically cut short. On October 1, 2017, in the vicinity of Waring Avenue and Williamsbridge Road, Washington was pursued by two men. The chase ended in a hail of bullets, with one shot fatally striking Washington in the torso. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital but succumbed to his injuries during surgery a few hours later.
The perpetrators, identified as brothers Nydrique and Kameke Jones, fled the scene
after the shooting, returning to their residence a block away. An investigation by the New York Police Department led to their apprehension. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear, but the brazen nature of the attack in a residential area sent shockwaves through the Pelham Parkway Houses community.
After a thorough investigation and legal proceedings, a jury found both Nydrique and Kameke Jones guilty of second-degree murder on October 5, 2022. On February 10, 2023, justice was served as the brothers were sentenced for their roles in Gregory Washington's death. Nydrique Jones, the gunman, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, while his brother, Kameke Jones, received a sentence of 20 years to life. The Bronx District Attorney's Office successfully prosecuted the case, bringing a measure of closure to the family of Gregory Washington and the community that was terrorized by this senseless act of violence.
