In the quiet seaside hamlet of South Jamesport, New York, the discovery of a young man's body near a gazebo at the town beach shattered the early morning calm. On a Monday in December of 2017, a 911 call was placed at 2:49 a.m. by an individual who had stumbled upon the tragic scene. The deceased was identified as 21-year-old Patrycjusz S. Rus, a recent graduate of Riverhead High School, class of 2015.

Responding officers from the Riverhead Town Police Department arrived to find Mr. Rus and immediately secured the area. The department's detective division, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office, initiated a death investigation. The initial findings pointed towards a self-inflicted gunshot wound as the cause of death. Authorities later confirmed that his death was being investigated as an apparent suicide. The case remained open pending further investigation, and the public was asked to provide any information they might have to the Riverhead Police Department's detective division. In the days that followed, arrangements were made for his visitation and a funeral Mass, as the community mourned the sudden and tragic loss of a young life. There have been no reports of any arrests or suspects in connection with this incident.
