In the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 31, 2021, the life of 38-year-old Elvys Familia was tragically cut short on a street in the Bronx. Responding to a 911 call about an unconscious male in the Mount Eden neighborhood, police and EMS arrived at approximately 4:29 a.m. to find Familia in front of 1476 Walton Avenue. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
The incident occurred just down the block from where Familia lived, shattering the peace of a neighborhood
residents described as typically quiet and familiar. Emergency medical services were already on the scene treating him when police officers from the 44th Precinct arrived. Familia was rushed to BronxCare Health System, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Crime scene investigators marked the area on East 172nd Street and Walton Avenue, where evidence of the violence remained. Despite the ongoing investigation by the New York Police Department, what led to the shooting remains unclear.
