On Christmas Day in 2017, Jarvis Porter, a 35-year-old male, was fatally shot in Rochester, New York. The incident occurred inside an apartment building on Genesee Street where Porter was confronted by two men, Joshua Burns and Elzie James, who were armed with a loaded shotgun. Porter was shot in the face and died from his injuries.
Following a thorough investigation by the Rochester Police Department, both Joshua Burns and Elzie James were arrested in connection with the murder.
The subsequent legal proceedings brought closure to the case. Elzie James pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree on May 31, 2018. Later, on June 20, 2018, a Monroe County jury convicted Joshua Burns of Murder in the Second Degree.
On August 9, 2018, both men were sentenced for their roles in Jarvis Porter's death. Joshua Burns received a sentence of 25 years to life in the New York State Department of Corrections. On the same day, Elzie James was sentenced to 25 years in prison with an additional 5 years of post-release supervision.
