James Payne, aged 25, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting on July 20, 2016, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident occurred in a community that was already grappling with unrest and violence during that summer. Payne, known as "JP" or "Baby," was struck by gunfire when attackers opened fire from a vehicle, which also resulted in another individual being wounded and hospitalized.
