In the late hours of a September night in Syracuse, New York, the life of 26-year-old Zyree McMullen was tragically cut short. On September 14, 2018, McMullen was found with a fatal gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. The incident left his family and community mourning the loss of a young man who was a father to a daughter.
The Syracuse Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide.
Detectives conducted a thorough neighborhood canvass, interviewed several individuals, and processed evidence collected at the scene. Their investigation soon pointed towards a suspect, 25-year-old Amir Williams of Syracuse. As law enforcement closed in, Williams fled the state in an attempt to evade capture.
With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, Amir Williams was located and apprehended in Cleveland, Ohio. Following his arrest, Williams was extradited back to Syracuse to face justice. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting death of Zyree McMullen. Williams was then held at the Onondaga County Justice Center as he awaited legal proceedings.
