On the morning of October 19, 2018, 30-year-old Demetrius Winfield, a male resident of Hempstead, NY, was fatally shot on Wellesley Street in his hometown. At approximately 10:54 a.m., while on a break from his job, Winfield was speaking with a friend when two men opened fire. The assailants fired at least 15 shots in a rapid 14-second burst. Winfield was struck in the face, chest, and groin and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
His friend was also wounded in the attack but survived.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of Jamik Cannon and Brian Marshall-Gibson on December 11, 2018. Authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but stemmed from a dispute between Cannon and Winfield that had occurred at a gas station three days prior. Both men were charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident.
Brian Marshall-Gibson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on April 29, 2020. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on August 24, 2020. Jamik Cannon's case went to trial, and on May 14, 2021, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. On July 23, 2021, Jamik Cannon was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison for his role in the murder of Demetrius Winfield.
