In the early morning hours of November 26, 2018, the body of 54-year-old Michael Malik Evans was discovered on East Suffolk Avenue, near the intersection of Church Street in Central Islip, New York. It was determined that Evans, a homeless man who also went by the first name Malik, had been fatally shot. The Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad immediately began an investigation into his death.
Less than two weeks later, on December 3, 2018, an arrest was made in connection with the murder. Enrique Vega Junior, a 47-year-old man from the neighboring community of Bay Shore, was taken into custody. At the time of his arrest, Vega was found to be in possession of 12.8 grams of crack cocaine. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Prosecutors revealed that the motive behind the killing was an alleged drug debt.
Video surveillance footage presented during the trial showed Vega firing six shots at Evans in the middle of the street. The trial began on July 9, 2019, and after three days of testimony, a jury found Enrique Vega Junior guilty on all counts on July 12.
On August 29, 2019, Enrique Vega Junior was sentenced for the murder of Michael Malik Evans. A Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice handed down a sentence of 50 years to life in prison. The sentence was structured as 25 years to life for the murder charge, with consecutive sentences for the weapon and drug charges. An appeal of the conviction was later filed, but the judgment was ultimately affirmed.
