On a late Saturday night in Central Islip, New York, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet, leading to the tragic death of 27-year-old Rahsaan Pressley. On September 19, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Pressley was the front-seat passenger in a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta traveling southbound on Carleton Avenue, near Hoppen Drive. Suddenly, another vehicle pulled alongside, and an occupant opened fire, riddling the Jetta with bullets.
Pressley was struck by the gunfire and was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead. A 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the back seat was also hit but survived with non-life-threatening injuries after being treated at the same hospital. The female driver of the Jetta was not injured in the attack.
From the outset, Suffolk County police detectives believed the shooting was not random and that the occupants of the car were specifically targeted.
The investigation into Rahsaan Pressley's death continued for more than a year and a half before a significant break in the case came as part of a large-scale law enforcement sweep targeting gang members and other fugitives in May 2022. Authorities arrested Quinton Booker, a 30-year-old from Mastic Beach, and charged him with the murder of Pressley. Prosecutors stated that Booker had used an assault rifle to fire from his vehicle into the car Pressley was in.
Further details emerged regarding the motive, with prosecutors alleging that the shooting was in retaliation for an incident that occurred earlier that same night, during which Pressley had reportedly pulled a knife on Booker's co-defendant, Tarrel Thaw. Thaw, who was allegedly with Booker at the time of the shooting, later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Booker's attorney maintained his client's innocence, stating that Booker denied any involvement in the killing.
