In the afternoon hours of a Tuesday in Yonkers, New York, a dispute between two groups of teenagers escalated into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Kasean Tuthill. On January 29, 2019, near the intersection of South Broadway and Vark Street, a confrontation that began as a fight quickly turned deadly when a handgun was introduced. Tuthill was shot twice in the back and also sustained wounds to his hip and lower torso.
Another young man, an 18-year-old, was also struck by gunfire but survived his injuries. Both victims were transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center, where Kasean Tuthill was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the shooting was swift, with the Yonkers Police Department dedicating detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit to piece together the events of that tragic afternoon. Through witness interviews and a review of surveillance footage, investigators were able to identify a suspect. The following morning, police apprehended 16-year-old Gavin Chisolm in connection with the fatal shooting. It was also discovered that during the altercation, Chisolm had sustained stab wounds to his thigh.
Gavin Chisolm was charged as an adolescent offender with second-degree murder for the death of Kasean Tuthill and attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of the second victim. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of youth violence, leaving two families irrevocably altered by the events of that day.
