Thirty-five-year-old Johnny Rios, a male NYPD officer, was found deceased in his Yonkers home on Shoreview Drive in the early morning hours of a Tuesday in mid-August. The initial investigation conducted by the Yonkers Police Department indicated that there were no signs of foul play involved in his death.
Officer Rios had been a member of the
NYPD for seven years and was assigned to the Yankee Stadium detail. His death was a somber moment for the department, as he was the eighth officer to take his own life that year, highlighting a growing concern over the mental health and well-being of law enforcement officers. The pressures and stresses associated with the job were brought into sharp focus by this series of tragic events.
Following his death, there was an outpouring of grief and support for his family, friends, and colleagues. Loved ones gathered for a wake in the Bronx, and his funeral Mass was held at St. Margaret of Crotona Church, attended by many who came to pay their respects to the fallen officer. He was laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers. As his death was ruled a suicide, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in connection with the incident.
