In the early evening of April 8, 2020, a dispute outside the Palisade Towers apartment complex on Schroeder Street in Yonkers escalated into a fatal encounter for 56-year-old Mark Payton. A resident of White Plains, Payton was engaged in an argument with another man when the confrontation turned violent. The other individual, later identified as 53-year-old Eric Greer of Manhattan, allegedly drew a handgun and fired a single shot.
The bullet struck Payton in the thigh, leading to
significant blood loss. Despite the efforts of first responders who were dispatched to the scene around 5:50 p.m., Payton was pronounced dead. The investigation quickly pointed to Greer as the suspected shooter, who had reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle immediately after the incident.
Law enforcement swiftly issued a 'Be On the Look Out' alert for Greer's vehicle. He was apprehended a short time later by members of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety on the Taconic State Parkway. Greer was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. His vehicle was impounded as part of the ongoing investigation.
