An 18-year-old male from Raleigh, North Carolina, Guy Vanlew Jr., was fatally shot in Yonkers, New York, on the evening of Saturday, July 17, 2021. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. at 53 Cliff Street, across from a playground. When police officers arrived at the scene after receiving a call about shots being fired, they found Vanlew, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was the second fatal shooting in Yonkers that month.
In the days following the incident, police canvassed the area for evidence while maintenance workers cleaned the sidewalks where the shooting took place. Vanlew's family gathered at the spot of his death to speak out against gun violence. His uncle, Jesse Vanlew, stated that his nephew was trying to fit in where he didn't belong. The family also called for an end to bail reform, expressing frustration that individuals accused of gun crimes could be released from jail quickly.
As of late July 2021, the Yonkers police had not made an arrest in the case and were asking the public for any information they might have. The investigation into the shooting of Guy Vanlew Jr. was ongoing, with the suspect still at large.
