On a summer evening in Yonkers, New York, the life of 19-year-old Elias Flores was cut short by a single gunshot. On August 10, 2016, Flores was brought to the emergency room of St. Joseph's Medical Center with a gunshot wound. The individual who dropped him off did not remain at the hospital, leaving a veil of mystery over the circumstances of the shooting. Within an hour of his arrival, Elias Flores was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later confirmed that he died from a single bullet that pierced his arm and entered his chest. The male victim was a resident of Yonkers.
The Yonkers Police Department launched an investigation that soon pointed to the Nodine Hill section of the city as the location of the shooting. Investigators were able to identify Sheppard Adeghe as the individual responsible for the death of Flores. In the days following the incident, Adeghe took drastic measures to evade capture. He applied for and received an emergency passport, which he used to board a flight to Amsterdam just two days after the shooting. From there, he made his way to Edinburgh, Scotland, in an attempt to start a new life as a fugitive.
The international manhunt for Sheppard Adeghe came to an end thanks to a tip received by the Yonkers Police. They learned of his whereabouts in Edinburgh and, with the cooperation of Scottish authorities and federal agencies, Adeghe was apprehended on September 1, 2016. After extradition proceedings, he was returned to the United States to face justice. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Adeghe ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. In October 2018, nearly two years after he fled the country, Sheppard Adeghe was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for the killing of Elias Flores.
