Kevin Barton, a 29-year-old Black man from the Bronx, was killed after gunfire erupted outside a residential building in the Morrisania area on the night of September 23, 2019. Police said they found him near the entrance around East 162nd Street and Melrose Avenue, unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. First responders rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators described a sudden, personal flashpoint in the moments before the
shooting. They believed Barton had gotten into an argument with another man nearby, and that the dispute escalated quickly—words tightening into a confrontation that ended when the other man produced a gun and fired into Barton’s chest.
The shooter ran off immediately after the shots, vanishing into the surrounding streets before officers could close in. In the first public accounts of the case, police had not announced a name, offered a physical description, or said whether the suspect knew Barton beyond that brief confrontation.
At the time the killing was reported, there had been no arrests, and the investigation was still open. Police publicly appealed for help from anyone who might have seen the argument, noticed the gunman fleeing, or recognized details that could identify him.
