A 29-year-old Black male, Jeffrey S. Johnson, died on Thursday, December 12, 2019, in Poughkeepsie, New York, after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound. The events leading to his death began to unfold around 2:21 p.m. when City of Poughkeepsie police were dispatched to Livingston Street for what was initially reported as a rollover car accident. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson inside a vehicle that had veered off the road, struck a tree, and come to a rest in a snowbank.
First
responders from the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department and Mobile Life Support Services were also at the scene and transported Johnson to a nearby hospital. It was during his treatment that medical personnel discovered he had suffered a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts, Johnson was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy would later confirm that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Investigators determined that Johnson had been shot about a block away from the Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department subsequently launched a homicide investigation into Johnson's death. They canvassed the area for evidence and urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact them. In the days following the incident, police had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting.
