In the early evening of May 27, 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence on the streets of Rochester, New York. Dakota Podlaski, a 20-year-old Caucasian male, was at the corner of Dewey Avenue and Magee Avenue when he was struck by a gunshot. The Rochester Police Department received calls reporting a drive-by shooting in the area around 7:40 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Podlaski with a gunshot wound to his torso.
He was rushed to the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Investigations later revealed that Podlaski was not the intended target but an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
The investigation into the death of Dakota Podlaski led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. On June 12, 2020, Jeremiah Barley, then 27 years old, was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The case proceeded through the justice system, culminating in a jury trial. In December 2021, a Monroe County jury found Barley guilty of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
On February 9, 2022, Jeremiah Barley was sentenced for his role in Dakota Podlaski's death. A New York State Supreme Court Justice sentenced him to a term of 35 years to life in prison. The sentence consisted of 25 years to life for the murder charge, with additional time for the weapons charges. During the proceedings, it was emphasized that Podlaski was an unintended victim of Barley's violent actions. The successful prosecution was credited in part to the willingness of community members to come forward as witnesses.
