Khalif Gethers, a 40-year-old Black / African American male, was killed in Brooklyn, New York, in the early hours of July 5, 2020, as the city’s Fourth of July celebrations spilled into the night with fireworks, crowds, and sudden gunfire. While many streets were still awake with music and people lingering outside, violence flared across several neighborhoods, and Brooklyn saw multiple shootings in a tight span of time.
Just after dawn, around 5:15 a.m., he was shot in the chest
outside the Langston Hughes Houses, a NYCHA development at 335 Sutter Avenue. The scene was jarringly ordinary and heartbreakingly close to home: a parking area beside a children’s playground. When officers arrived, they found him down on the ground, blood darkening the pavement. Nearby were small details that made the moment feel frozen in place—a red designer Hilfiger hat left beside the stained sidewalk, a boom box still there, and music still part of the air, as if the night hadn’t yet realized it was over.
He was rushed to Brookdale University Medical Center, but he did not survive.
