Jamel Jordan, a 34-year-old Black man, died on July 14, 2020, in Queens, New York, after an afternoon dispute in Far Rockaway spiraled into gunfire outside a home on Deerfield Road near Beach 29th Street. The first calls for help came in around 2 p.m., and when police and medics arrived they found two males suffering gunshot wounds to their torsos. Both were rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
In the first hours, investigators worked with fragments of a frantic scene: a relative inside the home heard the shots, discovered what had happened, and called 911. A revolver was recovered inside the residence, and officers began canvassing for surveillance video and witnesses while trying to piece together what had led to the gunfire. At that stage, police said they did not yet know the relationship between the two who had been shot, and the investigation remained open-ended.
As more was learned, the outline of the confrontation sharpened. Police accounts described a dispute between the man and the teenage boy that ended with gunfire at close range. One version, given early, was stark: during the argument, both the 34-year-old and the 15-year-old produced guns and shot at each other. CBS New York reported that investigators were looking at evidence consistent with a struggle over a single gun, describing it as a fight in which a firearm was pulled and discharged during the tussle, striking both victims. In footage obtained near the scene, a young man was seen being led away in handcuffs on Beach 29th Street shortly before 3 p.m.; police told the outlet the detention was connected to the shooting, but the same reports did not describe any announced charges stemming from it.
In terms of arrests and suspects, the publicly reported information surrounding Jordan’s death points back to the two people at the center of the dispute rather than to an outside attacker.
