On a summer evening in Brooklyn, New York, 18-year-old Antonio Villa was playing basketball with friends at a park in the Cypress Hills neighborhood on July 26, 2020. The lively scene turned tragic when a gunman, standing through the sunroof of a passing SUV, opened fire on the crowd. Villa was struck in the head by the gunfire. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on July 27, 2020.

The senseless act of violence also claimed the life of 16-year-old Kleimer Mendez, who was also shot in the head and died at the scene. A third teenager, aged 17, was shot in the leg but survived the attack. The community was left in shock and mourning, with friends and family gathering to remember the young lives lost. The day after the fatal shooting, further violence erupted at a memorial for the victims when another shooting occurred, leaving one person injured.
An investigation into the drive-by shooting led to the arrests of two individuals. Police apprehended a 15-year-old and 23-year-old Joshua Bonilla. Due to his age, the name of the younger suspect was not publicly released. Both suspects faced serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment for their alleged roles in the deadly shooting.
