On an early Sunday morning in August 2020, tragedy struck in Wyandanch, New York, forever altering the lives of a Bay Shore family. Mark Elijah Birthwright Jr., a 26-year-old Black male, was attending a house party on Patton Avenue with a friend. As they were leaving at approximately 2:00 a.m., what began as a social gathering turned into a violent confrontation that claimed a young life.
Known to his loved ones as 'Nuni' and to the music world as 'Slimm Bank$,' Birthwright was a beloved figure, remembered for his bright smile, his passion for basketball, and his burgeoning music career.
As Birthwright and his friend, Robert Brown, were exiting the party, Birthwright dropped a roll of cash. After he picked it up, they were confronted by two individuals, one of whom was later identified as Basheer Vinson of Brooklyn. The men, armed with firearms, demanded the money. A struggle ensued between Birthwright and Vinson, during which Vinson's distinctive purple baseball cap was knocked to the ground. In a senseless act of violence, Vinson fired a single shot into Birthwright's chest. When Brown attempted to intervene and help his friend, Vinson shot him in the side before fleeing the scene with the other individual. Mark Elijah Birthwright Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into Birthwright's murder spanned more than two years. A crucial piece of evidence left at the scene was the purple baseball cap that had fallen off the assailant's head during the struggle. DNA recovered from the hat, along with a partial DNA profile found on a spent 9mm cartridge casing, ultimately matched that of Basheer Vinson. On October 4, 2022, Vinson was arrested and charged with the murder of Mark Birthwright.
In September 2024, a jury found Basheer Vinson guilty of second-degree murder, attempted murder, attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. At his sentencing, Vinson maintained his innocence, but the judge handed down a sentence of 40 years to life in prison. The court proceedings brought a measure of closure to Birthwright's grieving family, who remembered him as a young man with a bright future ahead of him. His death was described by the Suffolk County District Attorney as a 'sudden, brutal and senseless' loss of life.
