An 18-year-old Black male, ZyQuaveone M. Mayo, was tragically killed on the evening of August 8, 2020, in a drive-by shooting in Albany, New York. The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. at the intersection of First and Quail streets in the city's West Hill neighborhood. At least 20 gunshots were reported to have been fired from a vehicle carrying more than one shooter.
Mayo was struck in the torso and was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to three other individuals, who were reported to be 22, 28, and 29 years old. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The death of Mayo marked the 11th homicide in the city of Albany for the year 2020, contributing to a significant wave of gun violence that the city was experiencing at the time. In the wake of the shooting, community members and local organizations gathered at the scene to rally against the ongoing violence.
Following the incident, the Albany Police Department launched an investigation into the drive-by shooting. However, despite their efforts, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the murder of ZyQuaveone M. Mayo. As of September 2020, his homicide remained unsolved. Police have continued to seek information from the public to help identify the suspects involved in the shooting. The case remains an active investigation, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
