In the evening hours of December 2, 2020, inside an apartment building on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, the life of 32-year-old Joenathan Pabon was tragically cut short. Responding to a 911 call at approximately 7:41 p.m., police officers arrived at 1000 Grand Concourse to find Pabon unconscious and unresponsive. He had sustained gunshot wounds to his torso and lower back.
Emergency medical services rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a suspect who was not only a resident of the same building but also Pabon's neighbor. On December 16, 2020, authorities arrested 25-year-old Elvis Torres in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the killing is believed to have stemmed from a dispute over drugs.
Following his arrest, Elvis Torres was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. The charges brought a measure of progress in a case that had ended a man's life and left a community seeking answers.
