In the late hours of a December night in Utica, New York, a dispute escalated into a tragedy that cut short the life of 17-year-old Jahzeir Johnson. The young man, known for his love of basketball and his engaging sense of humor, was fatally shot on the 1400 block of City Street on December 14, 2020. Authorities believe the incident stemmed from a physical altercation involving Johnson's sister and another woman.
It is thought that Johnson was intervening on his sister's behalf when he was shot multiple times. When police arrived at the scene, they found him lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led Utica Police to 23-year-old Charisma Hunt, who was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Johnson's death. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in a turn of events, Hunt pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
Initially, a plea agreement was in place that would have resulted in a five-year prison sentence for Hunt. However, during a subsequent hearing, a judge determined that she had violated the terms of her cooperation agreement. This violation led to a significantly harsher sentence. In May 2022, Charisma Hunt was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for her role in the death of Jahzeir Johnson, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that began with a late-night altercation and ended with a young life lost.
