In the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, on a Sunday night, the life of Terrell Liebert was tragically cut short. On January 3, 2021, inside an apartment at the Mott Haven Houses on East 143rd Street, gunfire erupted. When officers from the 40th Precinct arrived around 9:20 p.m., they discovered 26-year-old Terrell Liebert unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and torso.
Emergency medical services rushed Liebert to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Another young man, an 18-year-old, was also caught in the violence and sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand. He was also taken to Lincoln Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators.
Terrell, a resident of Burnside Avenue, was born on June 17, 1994, in Queens, New York. He was a beloved son, father, and friend who was known for his unique laugh and his love for life, family, and friends. His passions included playing basketball, video games, and listening to music. He is survived by his mother, stepfather, daughter, and numerous siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In the days following the shooting, the New York Police Department continued their investigation into the homicide. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, and police had not released a description of any suspects. The investigation into the deadly shooting remained ongoing.
