In the early morning hours of February 27, 2021, a dispute outside a Speedway convenience store on Maple Avenue in Elmira, New York, turned fatal. Shamal I. Gladden, a 44-year-old male, was not initially involved in the verbal confrontation that had broken out between two groups of people. He had arrived at the location separately.
Recognizing a friend's daughter being verbally harassed by several males, Gladden chose to intervene.
The situation quickly escalated, and one of the men involved in the dispute produced a handgun. Gladden was shot multiple times. He was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center by private vehicle, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead. Elmira Police had responded to the scene at approximately 3:40 a.m. after reports of a shooting, but found no individuals present upon their arrival.
The investigation led police to identify 34-year-old Khalid D. Abdul-Wahhab of Binghamton as the shooter. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Following his arrest, Abdul-Wahhab was arraigned in Elmira City Court and held at the Chemung County Jail.
In May 2022, a jury found Khalid D. Abdul-Wahhab guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Shamal Gladden. He was sentenced to a term of 25 years to life in prison. In addition to the murder conviction, he also received two concurrent 15-year sentences for criminal possession of a weapon, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision. Throughout the legal proceedings, Abdul-Wahhab maintained his innocence, and his defense indicated an intention to appeal the conviction.
