Gudelia Vallinas, a 37-year-old woman originally from Mexico, was walking home on March 12, 2021, when she was struck by a stray bullet. A dedicated wife and mother to her 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, she was just steps from her Astoria home after running a quick errand when she was caught in the crossfire of a violent dispute.
The incident began with an
altercation at the nearby Woodside Houses, which then spilled out onto the streets. As rival gang members exchanged gunfire near the corner of 48th Street and Broadway, Vallinas was fatally shot in the head.
