In the early morning hours of a spring day in Brooklyn, a father's protective instincts led to a tragic end. Vernon Kelly, a 49-year-old man, was shot and killed in Brownsville on April 20, 2021. The incident unfolded around 4:25 a.m. in front of a residence on Osborn Street.
The conflict began earlier in the evening as a dispute between Kelly's daughter and her ex-boyfriend.
In response to a call for help from his daughter, Kelly traveled from his home in Flatlands to the Brownsville location. Upon his arrival, a confrontation ensued between him and the suspect.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated to physical violence. The suspect, who was reportedly shirtless at the time, drew a firearm and shot Vernon Kelly in the chest. Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene, leaving one of his shoes behind. Police believe he may have escaped in a purple 2007 Chevrolet vehicle.
Emergency medical services rushed Kelly to Brookdale University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. At the time of the reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remained ongoing.
